Before arriving in Spain. Study visa for students from outside the European Union

In order to be able to enter and reside as a student in Spain, you must request a study visa in the Diplomatic Mission or the Spanish Consulate Office in the country you reside in. The compulsory documents for requesting the visa are: passport, acceptance letter, medical insurance, a negative certificate of criminal records extended by the authorities of your country of origin or of residence, and proof of economic ability to cover the expenses of your studies and residence.

Once in Spain, if your stay for your studies will be longer than six months, you must apply for an Identity Card for Foreigners (TIE) in the Bureau of Foreigners of Seville, after making an appointment in the following link:

There you must present You must mark the box which reads “TIE que documenta la primera concesión de la autorización de residencia temporal, de estancia o para trabajadores transfronterizos.”, which means “Foreigner's Identity Card which documents the first concession of authorization for temporary residence”. You must also present your passport, documentation that proves enrollment in the University, and a coloured passport sized photo. 


European Union Citizens

Students with European Union Citizenship or from another country that is part of the European Economic Space Agreement or Switzerland who will remain in Spain for longer than three months  for study or work must obtain a Certificate of registry as a EU citizen

NOTE: The European Health Insurance Card does not count as medical insurance for the purposes of applying for a NIE (Identity Number for Foreigners) renewal, if the applicant does not have healthcare in the Social Security System. Beneficiaries of this card are understood to be the citizens who are beneficiaries of the public healthcare system in their country of residence.
