Do you want to travel while your Identification Card is expired?
To travel to another country while your NIE (Number of Identification for Foreigners) is expired, you must ask the consulate of the country you will be visiting what procedures or requirements might apply to your case. Before you leave Spain, you must obtain an Authorisation to Return (Autorización de regreso (HI 1) - Migraciones) to be allowed to return. To get this authorisation you must have started the process of renovating your NIE.
The application for an Authorization to Return must be made with an appointment at:
Erasmus students from outside of the European Union
Erasmus students from a non-EU country coming from an European university can enter Spanish territory without a visa, as long as they have legal residence in the European country where they study. Nonetheless, to reside legally in Spain throughout their stay, the students who have not requested an entry visa for Spain must immediately request their inscription in the Registro Central de Extranjeros (Central Registry of Foreigners).
This procedure must be done in the Oficina de Extranjeros de Sevilla (Bureau of Foreigners in Seville). The documentation you must turn in will be the same as a normal renovation (see below the section “How to renew your Identity Card for Foreigners”), plus credentials or an invitation that shows the studies that will be undertaken in Spain are part of the foreign student’s study program of European University of origin.
